Why You Should Use Motion Detectors
Your commercial building’s security system provides a secure line of defence against intruders, but your system is only as good as the sensors you use.
One of the best types of sensors you can use in your building security system is motion detectors - they can alert your system as soon as an intruder is spotted.
How Do Motion Detectors Work?
When your system is armed, your motion detectors will use technology such as ultrasonic or passive infrared to pick up disturbances in the sound waves. These disturbances are caused by motion in the sensor’s visual field, indicating an intruder in your building.
When your motion detectors pick up on movement, they will alert your system to sound the alarm and notify you that your motion detectors have been triggered.
Why Choose Motion Detectors For Your Intrusion Detection System?
Using motion detectors as part of your security system improves your property safety with worry-free security.
Instead of manually checking things out for yourself, your motion detectors will alert you to an issue, allowing you to call the authorities without putting yourself in harm's way.
Are There Different Types Of Motion Detectors?
There are a few different types of motion detectors on the market, allowing you to opt for a product that suits your requirements. Some of these different types of motion detectors include:
- Microwave: Using the same technology you can find in your kitchen, microwave motion detectors send out microwave pulses that measure the reflections of moving objects. These motion detectors are great at covering larger areas.
- Ultrasonic: These motion detectors emit sound waves above human hearing frequency and detect the echo bounced back. The echoing pattern changes when an intruder is present, so the sensor triggers the alarm.
- Passive Infrared: One of the most common motion sensors available, passive infrared motion detectors are used widely in commercial security systems and work by detecting body heat and looking for temperature changes within a grid. If an intruder enters your business’s building and creates a blockage within the grid, changing the infrared levels, an alarm will be triggered.
- Dual technology: To reduce the number of false alarms that a security system triggers, these motion detectors use both ultrasonic and infrared technology to detect movement in the field of view.
- Contact: Whilst contacts are not motion detectors, they can be used on windows and doors to supplement the protection within the premises. They work using a magnet system, so that if the system is armed and the magnet current is broken (by a door or window opening), an alarm is sounded.
Are Motion Detectors Necessary?
A commercial building security system aims to alert you to intruders - if you don’t have motion detectors, then your security system won’t be able to pick up these intruders.
Aside from building security, motion detectors are also helpful for your company’s bottom line, helping you save on energy bills by only powering lights while personnel are in the room.
