Within a modernisation plan, Johnson Controls identifies product and system obsolescence levels based on three major phases of asset lifecycle management:

• Active - Equipment is part of a currently available product offering. Original replacement parts are readily available to service maintenance requirements and repairs.
• Discontinued - Equipment is not commercially available for new projects. Its serviceability is secured because original replacement parts remain available for a period of time.
• Obsolete - Serviceability is not secured. Original replacement parts for maintenance and repair are no longer available (Unless a specific agreement exists).
